Fellowship Series

The fellowship curriculum features several lecture series that progress throughout the year.

ECG Interpretations

The ECG Interpretations series includes monthly lectures focused on ED-pertinent ECG mastery. The series also consists of didactic lectures and a review of ECGs seen in the ED each month. We also review the ECG Weekly video lectures by renowned Dr. Amal Mattu.

Toxicology/Radiology Series

The Toxicology/Radiology series includes monthly lectures presented by the Department of Radiology teaching faculty. The lectures cover:

  • CT Brain Perfusion
  • Emergency Chest Radiography

Point of Care Ultrasound Series

The Point of Care Ultrasound series includes monthly lectures taught by USACS emergency Physician, Dr. Hilary Beason of UAB. The series features short didactic lectures followed by hands-on scanning sessions that cover:

  • eFast Exam
  • Rush Exam
  • Gallbladder Evaluation
  • IVC Measurement
  • DVT Evaluation
  • Arterial Evaluation
  • Abscess Location

Pediatric Simulation Center Series

The Pediatric Simulation Center series includes four half-day sessions at the Children’s of Alabama Pediatric Simulation Center. Each session covers a high-yield case in the simulation lab, which provides a hands-on learning experience. Following each simulation, a debriefing session takes place alongside brief didactic lectures. Topics covered include:

  • Respiratory Distress and Arrest
  • Cardiac Abnormalities (Congenital Heart Disease, Cardiomyopathy, Rhythm Abnormalities)
  • Hypotension (Sepsis, DKA, Dehydration)
  • Neurologic Emergencies (Altered Mental Status, Status Seizures, Child Abuse)
